2013 Nissan Sentra Review
2013 Nissan Sentra Reviewed
The 2013 Nissan Sentra offers some significant upgrades. Engineers have figured out how to shave 150 lbs off of the Sentra and extended the car out several inches longer. This allows rear leg room to expand by three full inches. Trunk space goes from 13 to 15 cu ft, a gain of two cubic feet. The longer, somewhat sleeker new Sentra shows off with LED-accented taillights and headlights. The Sentra transforms from modest to even sophisticated.
Nissan continues to embrace the continuously variable transmission, or CVT. A dramatic re-design arrives in 2013 with over 70 percent of the tranny’s components being updated. The achievement is a remarkable 40 percent reduction in friction. Less friction means more power passed on to the wheels, and better fuel economy.
This new CVT transmits the power of a new 1.8 L engine. It is actually smaller than the inline four 2.0 L engine that it replaces. And, it’s rated at 10 less horsepower. However, performance is not adversely affected because the engine is powering a lighter vehicle, and also because of the low-friction transmission.
Fuel economy is the big beneficiary of these engineering advances. The city EPA rating is 30 mpg and the highway rating is 39 mpg. Nissan has even introduced a FE series that tweaks the Sentra a bit more to reach that 40 mpg highway rating threshold. This big move toward fuel efficiency creates a casualty. The hi-performance SE-R and SE-R Spec V are no more. Nissan has discontinued them.
Safety is addressed with standard stability control, traction control, and electronic brake force distribution. Frontal air bags and side curtain airbags are standard as well.
Those that recall the staid and even austere earlier generation Sentras will marvel at the options now offered in this latest incarnation of the Sentra. How about the option of maple wood interior trim? Also, navigation can be added to the top-of-the-line SL. Leather seats, heated front seats, premium Bose audio w/8 speakers, and even a rear-view camera are all possibilities on the 2013 Sentra.
Add the NissanConnect electronic interface to your new Sentra and you’ll be able to do voice-activated Internet searches, make Pandora selections, and enjoy streaming Bluetooth. It’s even possible to verbally compose and send text messages.
