2012 Nissan Xterra Review
The 2012 Nissan Xterra has gained a reputation as a rugged, powerful vehicle for the daily driver with a bit of a wild side, and that reputation is well-earned. While the Xterra is clearly built for adventuring off the beaten path, it manages to hold up well during more mundane daily driving as well. Solid performance and a range of features all come wrapped in an attractive package for the 2012 model year.
One glance at the Xterra leaves no doubt what this vehicle is built for. A relatively high, wide stance is coupled with fenders that truly pop. The combination of an angular body style with more smoothly flowing features presents an attractive, aggressive appearance that seems built for the trail. The interior follows suit quite well, clearly valuing function above form. While not as attractive as car-based crossovers, the Xterra’s interior is laid out well enough. The simple design works well to place the emphasis on driving. All controls, gauges and other features are expertly placed, and the seating is rugged enough to hold up to the demands of off-road driving while still being comfortable enough for daily driving.
Performance of the 2012 Nissan Xterra
The primary selling point of the Xterra is certainly its performance. Under the hood rests a four liter V6 which puts out 261 horsepower to the wheels. Considering the reasonably light weight of the vehicle, the engine provides considerable power and acceleration when needed. The suspension delivers exceptional all-terrain performance and, somewhat surprisingly, manages to hold up quite well on most roads during normal driving.
Drivers looking for a good compromise between off-road ability and daily driving would do well to take a look at the 2012 Nissan Xterra. Safety ratings are fair overall, with good ratings for front and side impact crashes. Gas mileage, while not great, is quite acceptable for an off-road capable vehicle at 22 miles per gallon highway and 16 miles per gallon city. With a smooth ride under most conditions, a snappy six-cylinder engine and just enough additional features, the Xterra can pass equally well on blacktop or dirt trails.
