2012 Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet Review
The 2012 Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet occupies a curious place in the auto market as the the only true convertible SUV that money can buy. Based on the award-winning Murano midsize crossover, the Cross Cabriolet is tons of fun to drive by the beach while taking in some sunshine with a commanding seating position.
A leather-trimmed interior seats four passengers with 32.7 inches of rear legroom, enough space for average-sized adults. Not many convertibles on the market have a comfortable place to sit in the rear, and though the Cross Cabriolet sports two doors, entry and exit is made easier with front seats that slide forward and conveniently fold out of the way.
All-wheel drive comes as standard equipment, along with a 3.5-liter V6 engine also used in the Altima and Maxima. Power output measures 265 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque, sent to the wheels through a continuously variable automatic (CVT) transmission. The CrossCabriolet is no sports car despite its drop-top, but still hustles to highway speeds reasonably well. The EPA estimates fuel efficiency to be 17 city/22 highway mpg.
New for 2013 is an upgraded Nissan navigation system with touchscreen and voice control, plus compatibility with most smartphones and text-message-to-speech functionality. Offered in a single trim level, the upper-priced convertible comes with a Bose premium audio system, LED taillamps, 20-inch wheels and a quick-folding power convertible top with a glass rear window.
Anti-roll bars in the rear automatically deploy if a rollover is imminent, forming a crash barrier that held up well during IIHS collision testing. Traction and stability control systems are integrated with the AWD system to provide torque and to the wheels with the most traction. Stability at highway speeds is vastly improved by the AWD system, especially important in a less-rigid roofless car.
Buyers who want something truly unique to soak up some sun should give the Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet a test drive.
