Serve Your Community on MLK Day

This MLK Day is a great day to donate time to help serve your community. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for equality, service and love for your fellow man. Once you drive off the lot at your local Boston Nissan dealer, charities and donation centers around the Boston area could use your help. Many organizations turn MLK Day from a day off into a “day on,” collecting donations and doing various service projects.

If you want to do some good with the help of your new Sentra or Juke this holiday, here are some organizations in need of your service this holiday:

44th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast

Donate to student scholarships and community programs sponsored by Union United Methodist Church and St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church while enjoying delicious food, listening to live entertainment and hearing engaging speeches from the likes of Governor Deval Patrick, Mayor Marty Walsh, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, and more.

$50, Monday, January 20, 8 a.m., Boston Convention Center and Exhibition Center, 415 Summer St, Boston, mlkbreakfastboston.org.

Day of Service and Celebration

After breakfast, Mayor Walsh will head to Faneuil Hall for a Day of Service and Celebration. This free event includes a concert, storytelling, and notable appearances including keynote speaker Judy Richardson, a civil rights leader and documentary filmmaker. Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved as well, and hear about ways Dr. King’s legacy lives on today.

Free, Monday, January 20, 1 p.m., Faneuil Hall, 1 Faneuil Hall Square, Boston, maah.org.

Boston Cares

Local non-profit network Boston Cares is hosting a massive day of service across the city. While most events are filled, it is not too late to get involved. They need people to help check in volunteers. They will be registering outreach volunteers all day so sign up here to get involved!

Free, Monday, January 20, All day, Directions sent with e-mail upon sign-up. bostoncares.org

MLK Food Drive from All For Good and Wheelock College

Can’t make it out on Monday for the Day of Service? Are all the events in your area filled up? That’s ok, because Wheelock College and AllForGood.org have partnered for the MLK Food Drive. Volunteers around the Wheelock campus will be collecting non-perishable food items between 1/22 and 1/30 to donate to the Greater Boston Food Bank. Come to campus and donate using one of the boxes placed around campus or contact organizer Jonathan Lewis to find out how you can lend a hand.
